Palaia - is a medieval town long disputed amongst Florence, Pisa and Lucca, due to its strategic location between the valleys stretching along the Arno and Era rivers. Visitors should not miss its civic tower built in the sixteenth century and the Church of San Martino, a magnificent building built in 1280. The Church of Sant’ Andrea, dating back to 1200, was probably constructed on the site of an ancient pagan temple dedicated to Saturn. It is worth going into the Church to admire a Della Robbia Madonna, several glazed terracotta statues from the Della Robbia School and a fifteenth century wooden sculpture depicting a ‘Madonna and Child’ by Francesco di Valdambrino.
